The Wedding Banquet – 1880 painting by Utica artist Lawrence W. Ladd
Bible readings: Isaiah 25.1–9, Psalm 23, Philippians 4.1–9
Gospel Reading [NRSVA] Matthew 22.1–14
Once more Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying: ‘The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding banquet, but they would not come. Again he sent other slaves, saying, “Tell those who have been invited: Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.” But they made light of it and went away, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his slaves, maltreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged. He sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his slaves, “The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.” Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad; so the wedding hall was filled with guests.
‘But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing a wedding robe, and he said to him, “Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding robe?” And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, “Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” For many are called, but few are chosen.’

Send a Sheep
You may remember a project that took place earlier this year called ‘Send a Sheep’ organised by 1277 Make Them Count, a UK-wide network supporting church-based toddler groups. The campaign focused on raising awareness and praying for toddler group ministries, leaders, and the families they support and was centred around “Jesus the Good Shepherd” (based on John 10:14–16).
Groups from across the country created or provided sheep to represent their group, and these were taken to parliament to demonstrate to MPs and guests the scale and wonderful diversity of early-years community groups across the country.
In St Mary’s Church, the Monday morning ‘Breakfast and Breathe’ group made some sheep pictures for Little Lights Toddler group – you may remember some brightly coloured sheep as well as white, fluffy ones on display! We felt that these sheep represented the diversity of church users here at St Mary’s.
After the event in Parliament, representatives from church toddler groups were able to take a sheep back to their own church, so that they could pray for that group.
This week we were contacted by a lady called Michelle who runs a baby and toddler group called Little Nippers at River City Church in Hull! She adopted the picture of the diverse sheep (photo of our display) from the Playtime National Conference where she was encouraged to pray for the group. She asked us if there were any specific requests for prayer for Breakfast and Breathe Group.
Michelle said ‘I really do love the diversity! Just makes me think of how a church should be, little snippets of what it will be like as it says in Revelation!!’
It was a lovely surprise to hear from Michelle, and a blessing to have her prayers for us. Hilary and I will be in contact with her with our thanks.
Thank you to the members of Breakfast and Breathe who made sheep, we certainly didn’t know where they would end up! Let’s keep sharing the Baa-rilliant news of what we do here in Penlee Cluster! Jenny
