The calling of St Matthew by Jacob van Oost 1640

Bible readings: Romans 4: 13-end & Matthew 9: 9-13,18-26

Gospel Reading [NRSVA]

The Calling of Matthew

As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he got up and followed him.
And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax-collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, ‘Why does your teacher eat with tax-collectors and sinners?’ But when he heard this, he said, ‘Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice.” For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.’

A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed

While he was saying these things to them, suddenly a leader of the synagogue came in and knelt before him, saying, ‘My daughter has just died; but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.’ And Jesus got up and followed him, with his disciples. Then suddenly a woman who had been suffering from haemorrhages for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak, for she said to herself, ‘If I only touch his cloak, I will be made well.’ Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, ‘Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.’ And instantly the woman was made well. When Jesus came to the leader’s house and saw the flute-players and the crowd making a commotion, he said, ‘Go away; for the girl is not dead but sleeping.’ And they laughed at him. But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl got up. And the report of this spread throughout that district.

NightChurch

Such a joy and privilege to share about NightChurch at the HeartEdge National Conference in Birmingham.  It was wonderful to connect with so many people passionate about this work.  Encouraging, too, to hear how NightChurch might be a model and resource for others seeking to create welcoming, inclusive spaces in their own communities.  Victoria

As part of the HeartEdge National Conference, Victoria Hodgkinson and Lesley Michell led a workshop titled “Exploring NightChurch in Your Context,” drawing on the experience of NightChurch Penzance at St Mary’s. Rooted in the story of a community that has grown steadily since it first opened its doors in November 2023, they shared how NightChurch now offers midweek evenings where people from many different backgrounds can find warmth, conversation and a place simply to be.

Using the theme “Christ in the Stranger,” the workshop invited participants to reflect on welcome, presence, careful listening and good safeguarding as they think about creating evening spaces for those who may feel disconnected from society or from traditional models of church. Victoria and Lesley drew on NightChurch’s commitment to being fully inclusive and explored how similar initiatives might take shape in very different local settings.

The session sat well within the wider HeartEdge vision of churches that hold together congregation, compassion, culture and commerce, encouraging local congregations to pay attention to those on the edges and to the particular gifts and needs of their own neighbourhoods. Hosted within the “Partnerships in your Community” HeartEdge conference for churches in Birmingham, the workshop offered practical ideas, honest sharing of challenges and a strong sense that the story of NightChurch Penzance can encourage others who long to open their buildings for contemplative, community‑focused hospitality after dark.
