18th century Dutch tile showing Paul and Silas in jail

7th Sunday of Easter

Bible Reading: Acts 16 v16-34

Despite being in prison, Paul and Silas prayed and sang hymns, which led to an earthquake that opened the prison doors. The jailer, fearing the prisoners had escaped, was about to kill himself, but Paul stopped him and shared the message of salvation with him and his family. The jailer and his family were baptized, and Paul and Silas were then released.

Opening prayer from The Quiet Path by Andrew Rudd

The quiet path is a path of contemplation.  Paying attention, noticing, beholding, we look at what is becoming present to us in the world around and that leads us to become present to what we meet or who we meet.

This relationship in which we become connected to a reality beyond ourselves is contemplation.  The word itself, in its etymology, is about going into a temple. Contemplation is a little walk that leads to deep encounter, that quiet secret place.

Contemplation is the quiet path that leads to quiet, the path of peace that leads to peace.  In the practice of quietness we already encounter quietness.

The practice of contemplation is not mysterious; it is mostly about letting go, clearing out and removing anything that might keep us from presence.

Closing Prayer

Night falls, the world stills:
Glory to God in the light from darkness,
Glory to God in he gift of night to day.
Night falls, the world stills
in the embrace of the Spirit, we rest,
Let our sleeping and dreaming be blessed.  Amen      (Julyan Drew)

Civic Service and Cluster Service at St. John’s Church

Sunday 22nd June

The service this year (as last) is also the Civic Service. It is the Feast of John the Baptist. Traditionally, the Civic Service marks the start of the week-long Gowan Festival and  is attended by the Town Mayor ( Cllr Stephen Reynolds) and Deputy Mayor ( (Cllr Nicole Broadhurst) and other town councillors, together with other visiting mayors and their consorts. Joining them will be members of our congregations, children from St Mary’s and Madron Daniel schools, members of various community groups and people from our community.

I am particularly excited to say that we will also have our new Bishop David Williams joining us, who will be preaching. The theme of this year is’ On the Crest of a wave’ (‘War Grib Don’).

The service will be at 11.00am, which is preceded by a parade beginning at St John’s Hall, walking along Alverton Street, down Market Jew Street, left at the Longboat, then up to St John’s church. You are welcome to join us for both the parade and the service, or to come straight to St John’s for the service. If you are joining the parade, please be at St John’s Hall by 10.15am. We welcome all of you to join us for our service this year. Any queries please contact Derath on derathdurkin@penleecluster.org.uk.

Call to Prayer at Chapel Street Methodist Church

Saturday 7th June

Our world is in a dreadful state and desperately needs prayer. We invite you to join us on Saturday 7th June at 10.00am at Chapel Street Methodist Church to pray for our world, our country, our community. We are stronger together; bring your friends to pray with us. – Churches Together in the Penzance Area (CTiPA)

Thy Kingdom Come

Thy Kingdom Come (TKC) is a global ecumenical prayer movement that invites Christians around the world to pray from Ascension to Pentecost for more people to come to know Jesus. Since it began in May 2016, God has grown TKC from a dream of possibility into a movement that unites more than a million Christians in prayer in nearly 90% of countries worldwide, across 85 different denominations and traditions, so that friends and family, neighbours and colleagues might come to faith in Jesus Christ. Every person, household and church is encouraged to pray during the 11 days in their own way. It is our hope and prayer, that those who have not yet heard the Good News of Jesus Christ and His love for the world, will hear it for themselves and respond and follow Him. Specifically, we again invite each and every Christian across the globe to pray that God’s Spirit might work in the lives of five people who have not responded with their ‘Yes’ to God’s call. Whether you have joined in with Thy Kingdom Come before or not, we invite you to take part from 29th May – 8th June 2025. – Thy Kingdom Come
