October Holiday Club

We are running holiday club for four days in half term. To keep costs down as much as possible, we have sourced some free activities for the children: these will be visits to Godolphin House, Helston Museum and Flicka Donkey Sanctuary, care home visits with Generations United as well as cooking and crafts in St Mary’s Church supported by Sally Crabtree, artist. Could you sponsor a place for a child for a day at holiday club? A donation of £5 would cover this. Many of you will donate to food banks – for the holiday club week (27th – 31st October) might you be able to donate food to Holiday Club instead? We are looking for the following items for picnic lunches on two days (food to be in date for 31st October): bread rolls (packs of 12 rolls) 6 packs; butter – 2 tubs; ham – 2 packs of 30 slices; cheese – 2 packs of grated cheese; crisps – 2 packs of 30 packets; fruit – apples, oranges, bananas; yogurts – Frubes 8 packs; cakes – enough for 25 people per day! If you are able to help with any of these items, please let Molly or Jenny know at molly.blewett@penleecluster.org.uk or jenny.orpwood@penleecluster.org.uk. Many thanks for your continued support to local children and thank you so much to everyone who has already donated. – Molly & Jenny, Family Workers
Sustainable Sunday at St. John’s Church
Update
We welcomed many families into St John’s Church for Sustainable Sunday on Sunday 5th October, some for the first time. They enjoyed the free soft play session and almost everyone left with a new book and/or item of clothing! Very positive feedback and we plan more Sustainable Sunday events on 9th November and 7th December, from 3.30pm – 5.30pm, ending with a meal at 5.30pm. More details to follow – save the dates! Many thanks to those who donated such lovely books and clothes. We have encouraged people to come back and swap their books at the next event to keep it sustainable, but donations will be welcome. – Jenny, Family Worker
Sunday 5th October 2025
We will be holding a Sustainable Sunday event at St John’s Church on Sunday 5th October from 9.00am -11:30am.
The aim of this is to promote more sustainable lifestyles and therefore is linked to looking after God’s creation and also to help children and families struggling with the cost of living. There will be a free play session for children at Sea Life Soft Play, plus a clothes bank and book bank and simple refreshments with suggested donation. We are aiming to make this mainly a clothes and book ‘swap’ session, but you will be able to pick up an item of clothing for 50p or a book for £1.00. The book can then be ‘swapped’ in at a future ‘Sustainable Sunday’ event. The plan is to have the clothes bank and book bank open once a month. We have some resources to start but we need your help! Please donate any good quality items of children’s clothing (including school uniform) and books (either adults’ or children’s). If you would like to buy a book to help start this then ‘The Works’ in Penzance often has good offers on classic picture books for children or you could buy an item of clothing to donate. Please take any items to St. Pol de Léon, St. Peter’s or St. Mary’s Church. Donations will be collected on Wednesday 1st October. If you could label your donations ‘Sustainable Sunday’ that would be very helpful. This initiative is a collaboration of St John’s Church, St Mary’s Act on Poverty Group, a response to Creationtide, Penlee Cluster Family Workers, Molly and Jenny and Sea Life Soft Play. In the words of Penlee Cluster let’s ‘reach out together’. – Hilary, St. Mary’s Church
Holiday Club Summer 2025
We are pleased to announce that once again we are able to run the Penlee Cluster Holiday Club for children over the Summer. We have been awarded funding for 16 days for 20 children from Time2Move, but in addition are able to accommodate between 5 -10 extra children on some days. Molly has planned a summer packed with activities for the children. We start most days at St John’s Church, using this as our base. Both our Family Workers plus a team of helpers, junior leaders and volunteers help this much needed provision to take place.

Help needed! Although we receive a grant, this does not cover everything and as we are all aware, food costs are rising. If you are able to make a donation to Holiday Club please leave this at St Mary’s clearly marked ‘Holiday Club’ or see Keno. Might you be able to bake a cake for the children to share? Please mark with ingredients used (as some children have allergies) and leave at St Mary’s or St John’s. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
