The meal at the house of a Pharisee by van Brunswijk

11th Sunday after Trinity

Bible readings:
Ecclesiasticus 10:12-18;
Psalm 112;
Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16;

Luke 14:1, 7-14

He said also to the one who had invited him, ‘When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbours, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.’

Paul Church Talk

Judges I have Loved
a talk by John Gallagher KC
Tuesday 2nd September

Last year John Gallagher gave us a thoughtful and discussionprovoking analysis of the current state and future role of the Law. Given his career history as an accredited Mediator, a Barrister, Master of the Bench of Gray’s Inn and since 1994 a part time Judge of the Crown and County Court, few can be better qualified to speak on his chosen 2025 topic. He has subtitled it ‘Judges I have known: the good, the bad and the judgly’….  This year’s talk may well be even more memorable, definitely not to be missed. Doors open at 7.00pm. Talk starts at 7.30pm. £5.00 entry, includes nibbles. Drinks on sale before and afterwards.

OTHER INFORMATION & EVENTS

Cornwall Faith Forum

The next event at Penmount will be on Sunday 28th September at 2.00pm and will be led by the Christian Community. There will be two themes: one will be Creationtide which all churches observe between 1st September and 4th October. The second theme is angels. On 29th September churches keep the Feast of St Michael and All Angels. This day is relevant to Cornwall because of a legend linked to St Michael’s Mount – do come and hear this moving story. We are aware that ‘angels’ are a feature in many religions and so we are asking those who will be attending the worship on 28th September to bring something linked to angels, either a reading or prayer from your faith tradition or a personal experience of angels from your life. As always drinks – hot and cold – will be available and please bring some vegetarian food to share. – Andrew Yates.

Prayer Walk West Penwith

The following series of walks is being arranged by Hayle Light & Life Church but it is hoped it will be well supported by the wider ecumenical church in Penwith. – Sarah, Penwith Deanery

Join in our series of 5 walks around the whole of West Penwith to pray for the area as well as enjoying some beautiful and challenging walking along the stunning Cornish coast and the main section of St Michael’s Way.

We will meet at 9.00am and pray before we set off. As the walks are reasonably long, we’ll stop for lunch around half way and also finish off with a prayer at the end. We won’t be expecting to pray the whole time but feel free to carry on with any intermittent worship or prayer while we walk. Please sign up, providing a mobile number and email address to Simon Burgess at simon_burgess@live.com You’re welcome to come along at the beginning and join us for a short part of the walk but please let Simon know if you’re not doing the whole walk. Please bring your own lunch. We will check bus times to return to pick up any cars left at the start or will possibly organise lifts if that’s feasible. We will probably go out in all weathers as long as it’s not excessively wet or windy or at all dangerous. So please come prepared. If any walk is postponed, dates will be adjusted and we’ll send out emails to confirm any changes.

Dates: 30th Aug Zennor to St Just; 13th Sep St Just to Porthcurno ;

20th Sep Porthcurno to Penzance; 27th Sep Penzance to St Ives

St. Martin-in-the Fields Autumn Lecture Series

Here I Stand”

St Martin-in-the-Fields Autumn Lecture Series 2025 investigates those things in which we believe deeply – and for which we would be prepared to make a costly stand. We have assembled an inspirational line-up of speakers from the world of faith, politics, literature, poetry, dance, economics, psychology, history and academia. Each lecture addresses this question through the lives and perspectives of people who have advocated and often faced opposition for the things they believe in: individuals who have not just written or spoken about, but lived the values they have professed. Each of these speakers through their lives offer insight, prophecy, challenge, controversy, hope, warning, courage and vision. Where do you stand?

As the world faces an increasing threat from the erosion of democracy, trust and truth and the rise of populism and nationalism, our 2025 lecture series addresses a world divided by conflict and a planet in crisis. Through these compelling and diverse voices it asks the question: Where do I stand? What are the things that hold my life together, and lie at the very core of all I am? What are the values that I will not renounce and are there beliefs that I hold that I would give my life for? – Revd Dr Sam Wells, Vicar, St Martin-in-the-Fields

The series takes place at St Martin-in-the-Fields with a live audience in the church. The lectures are also live-streamed and take place between Sunday 14th September – Monday 24th November.

All are welcome. For more information on speakers and dates and to book, please see here: https://www.stmartin-in-thefields.org/congregational-life/lectures/
