The parable of the sower by Marten van Valckenborch 1590

Bible readings: Romans 8:1-11 and Matthew 13.1–9, 18–23

Gospel Reading [NRSVA]

That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the lake. Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach.  And he told them many things in parables, saying: ‘Listen!  A sower went out to sow.  And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up.  Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil.  But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away.  Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them.  Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.  Let anyone with ears listen!’

‘Hear then the parable of the sower.  When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path.  As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet such a person has no root, but endures only for a while, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away.  As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing.  But as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.’

A ‘thank you’ from Revd Jacky Wise

Thank you … for the most amazing Licensing Service on Monday, and for the many warm welcomes during my first week with you. The service was wonderful and deeply humbling, and I’m so grateful to everyone who contributed, and for all the preparations for the Bring & Share.  I’m so excited to be here, and very much looking forward to working with you all as we live the love of God in our communities.
Blessings,
Jacky

A Glorious Celebration

What a glorious celebration we had on Monday as we welcomed the Reverend Jacky Wise as our new Priest in Charge and witnessed her licensing by Bishop David!  Some 150 people streamed into St. Mary’s on a sun-drenched evening representing our four churches and we were joined by the King’s representative, the Town Mayor, Staff and children from our schools and representatives of many local organisations.  Some of the singing nearly raised the roof.

Bishop David gave Jacky – and ALL of us – a powerful challenge to follow the example of the fishermen in our gospel reading from Luke 5.  They did as Jesus said (despite having caught nothing all night!) when he said, ‘Put out into deep water and let down your nets for a catch’ – and the huge catch quite overwhelmed them.  We were urged to persevere in faith when we are discouraged and go bravely into the deep waters of new challenges, knowing that Jesus is with us – and be expectant for a great catch, against all the odds.  Let us all support Jacky prayerfully in this new chapter in the life of our churches.

Welcome, Jacky – and may God richly bless your ministry among us!

The Rainbow Project

Getting ready for Holiday Club

We have been successful in our application to the St Paul’s Trust for an innovative school and church choir project!
Our Family Worker, Jenny, will be leading a junior choir at St Mary’s C of E School on a weekly basis, then combine them with the church choir at St Mary’s Church for a monthly service.
Both St. Mary’s Church and School are very excited about this project which develops intergenerational links and also will expand our repertoire of worship music.
The project will start in October 2026 and has funding for 12 months initially.  Watch this space for more details nearer the time!  My thanks to Vicky for helping with the application.  Hilary, Rainbow Project Lead
