Will Keating & John Dowling

Candlelit Concert Tour

Will Keating & John Dowling, Cornish Folk with a Splice of Bluegrass:

Will Keating and John Dowling both love their home county of Cornwall.  Their passion for their county shines through in their music but also with the venues they have chosen for their February 2022 Candlelit Concert Tour. They are playing in some very old historical churches and some newer rebuilt/restored ones in some wonderful Cornish hamlets, villages and towns. This is a very meaningful tour to both musicians.

Will and John met for the first time in 2016 when John’s wife Anna, agreed to play fiddle on Will’s Debut album “Cornwall My Home” (Kernow Ow Thre). John (who plays Banjo) and Will (guitar and vocals) both had a similar sense of humour and passion for creating music.

Will invited John to play on his album, which John found an interesting experience. “As a banjo player, I’m used to fairly fast and furious, and pushing my musical ability. But when Will called me in to record, I found another side to being a banjo player – playing from the heart. Although in comparison, Will’s music was slower and less complicated than I was used to, it required a deeper emotional sense of musicality than I had expected”.

Will was blown away by John's banjo playing and thoroughly enjoyed the album mixing process, listening more intently to what John had laid down. The album was finally cut and Johns playing had a great influence on a great number of the tracks.

Like Will, John is a professional performer and was a good match for taking the album on the road, which developed from a few gigs into full tours. Will and John have not only cemented their relationship off the stage becoming great friends, but they have also received accolades from far and wide, enjoying performing together on BBC Radio Cornwall, in pubs, festivals, concert halls and community spaces.  Will & John's first successful tour took place in 2019 to the Isles of Scilly.  "This was my first tour with another musician and a lot of the time we would be sharing rooms". "You never quite know how you will get on in these situations, but John and I had a blast off the stage and a real connection when we were performing".

Their highlight performance, so far, must be at the Iconic Minack Theatre in 2021 to a capacity crowd.  The evening featured special guests including Harry Glasson, Anna Dowling, veteran double bass player Claudia Colmer and members of Helston Town Band.

Will and John then recorded and produced Wills Gyllyngdune EP during the breaks in covid restrictions which was released in 2020. The tracks were recorded at historic venues, Treslothan Church, St Just Miners Chapel and Newlyn Chapel. "I really enjoyed recording in these special places and have since performed at a number of church venues"; Will explained. "I love performing songs that can connect an emotion to the audience and these wonderful places, with all their history and heritage, add another dimension to the performance for sure".

So this is where the seed was planted.  Will Keating & John Dowling will be touring Churches around their beloved Cornwall in February 2022. All the performances will be candlelit, making for a very special evening of live music and entertainment.

Reviews:

“John Dowling is the most remarkable banjo player I’ve heard in ages” Billy Connolly

“John Dowling’s banjo playing reminds us of the breadth of expression this sometimes-maligned instrument is capable of. In his hands the dignity to this instrument is restored.

John is not just a great banjo player but a master musician” Ralph McTell
